Celebrating 300 years of history.

Last Friday was a very special day as we came together to celebrate two remarkable milestones:

100 years of Demos Ciclitira
200 years of George Harker

The occasion was marked by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Gerald McDonald, celebrating the history and legacy of two businesses that between them represent an incredible 300 years in business.

We were also delighted to hear from Rebecca King, Managing Director of Demos Ciclitira, Maxim McDonald, Managing Director of Gerald McDonald Group and Braintree Councillor Richard van Dulken, who each helped mark this very special occasion.

A wonderful afternoon celebrating our past, our people and everything still to come.

A Moment for the History Books.

Friday’s celebrations centred around the unveiling of a commemorative plaque marking two extraordinary milestones – 100 years of Demos Ciclitira and 200 years of George Harker.

The plaque was unveiled by Gerald McDonald, with speeches from Rebecca King, Maxim McDonald and Councillor Richard van Dulken reflecting on the significance of the occasion.

Reaching 100 years in business is something we’re immensely proud of. To be able to celebrate alongside George Harker as they mark an extraordinary two centuries made the occasion even more special.

300 years of combined history – and a permanent reminder of a very special day.

A Celebration Shared Together.

Reaching 100 years in business is a milestone worth sharing.

Last Friday, we were delighted to bring together colleagues from Demos Ciclitira, George Harker and Gerald McDonald Group, along with friends and guests, to celebrate two remarkable anniversaries.

Since Demos became part of the Gerald McDonald Group last year, we’ve been proud to become part of a wider family of businesses with its own long history and experience.

The afternoon was a chance to celebrate 100 years of Demos Ciclitira and 200 years of George Harker, while bringing together many of the people who are now part of the next chapter of that story.

While we celebrated we reflected on Maxim’s speech where he put into perspective just how unusual these anniversaries really are.

Of the estimated 300 million businesses worldwide, only around 10,000 to 20,000 are thought to have survived for 100 years.

Reaching 200 years is rarer still, with Maxim highlighting estimates suggesting that only around 400 to 500 businesses worldwide have achieved that milestone.

Once the plaque had been unveiled and the speeches and anniversary toast completed, it was time to enjoy the afternoon.

And what an afternoon it was.

Live music, canapes, wood-fired pizzas, fish & chips, artisan ice cream, drinks and, most importantly, the chance for colleagues, friends and guests to relax and spend time together.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate 100 years of Demos Ciclitira alongside George Harker’s remarkable 200th anniversary.

As Maxim McDonald reminded us during his speech, very few businesses ever reach either milestone.

The odds of a business reaching 100 years are approximately about 0.005% – roughly 1 in 20,000.

The odds of reaching 200 years are about 0.00015% – roughly 1 in 650,000.

That made having everyone together to enjoy the occasion feel even more special.

We’ve loved looking back at the photographs from last Friday’s centenary celebrations this week.

From Gerald McDonald unveiling our commemorative plaque, to the speeches, anniversary toast and the celebrations that followed, it was an afternoon that will remain part of Demos history.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, everyone who helped make the event happen and all those who have contributed to the Demos story over the generations.

And congratulations once again to George Harker on an extraordinary 200 years in business.

We’re proud of where we’ve come from, and very much looking forward to where we go next.
